Every teacher wants students to become their own teachers over time. Students develop the ability to be self-directed — independent of needing immediate support from the teacher — and solve their own problems, which is a recurring dream of teachers. But how do we develop independent learners when we as educators have so many other demands? Interestingly, one of the most effective strategies we have for building student learning independence is through our feedback approach.
Feedback has the potential to double the speed of learning. A key aspect of feedback is the quality of feedback delivered and used by teachers and students. The quality of feedback improves when students clarify their expectations, when teachers assume a guiding role, and when students provide feedback to students as they learn information in the classroom.

Each quality feedback criteria and associated strategies are shown below.Ensure that students are clear about expectations for success at different levels of performance. Students need to know the difference between a-level and B-level papers. In addition, they need to know what the key criteria are for their success. Finally, the reciprocal impact of giving, receiving, and using feedback cannot be overstated. We need to make sure students are giving each other accurate feedback. Starting with clarity is a way to ensure that feedback becomes a common cause between teachers and students.
Explore examples: Provide students with samples of work covering a range of performance levels. Ask students to rank sample assignments and share their reasons for ranking each assignment. Next, share your rankings and reasons, and discuss how your ideas differ from those of the students.
Construct goals and criteria for success together: A rule is usually a list of answers that students need to learn (for example, add fractions to a common denominator). Instead of giving students answers, give them questions (e.g., how can we add fractions with the same common denominator?).
