The Ministry of Education recently replied to the suggestion put forward by netizens to “bring the prevention of myopia among primary and secondary school students into the school assessment indicators”.
According to the news on August 4 of the Chinese government network, the netizen “Princess Baby” (mobile phone tail number 7037) from Beijing left a message through the column “I say a word to the premier”: “the myopia rate of primary school students in China is over 30% and that of high school students is 80-90%, which will seriously affect China’s future population quality, even threaten population security and relate to the future of the country and the nation. Myopia of primary and middle school students has been recognized as a public health problem, which needs better public health measures. Using eyes scientifically and increasing outdoor activities are effective methods to prevent myopia, and the cost is also low. However, at present, there are many phenomena among primary school students, such as insufficient outdoor time during school, no going out of the classroom during recess and lunch break, excessive use of PPT in classroom teaching, inadequate supervision of students’ writing posture by teachers, and random occupation of physical education classes. It is suggested that the myopia prevention of primary and secondary school students should be included in the assessment indicators of schools or school leaders, eliminate the phenomenon of forcing students not to leave the classroom during recess and lunch break, and jointly do a good job in the prevention of juvenile myopia through multiple channels and measures. ”
In this regard, the Ministry of education replied that strengthening the prevention and control of myopia among children and adolescents and promoting the visual health of children and adolescents is a “bright project” of central concern, public concern and social concern. In August 2018, with the consent of the State Council, the Ministry of education and other eight departments jointly issued the implementation plan for comprehensive prevention and control of myopia among children and adolescents (hereinafter referred to as the implementation plan), further defined to strengthen the assessment of myopia prevention and control, and included the prevention and control of myopia among children and adolescents, the overall nearsightedness rate and physical health status in the government performance assessment, It is strictly prohibited for local people’s governments at all levels to unilaterally assess education administrative departments and schools based on students’ examination results and school enrollment rate. We will bring vision health into quality education, bring children’s and adolescents’ physical and mental health and schoolwork burden into the national compulsory education quality monitoring and evaluation system, and hold local governments and schools accountable according to law for the decline of children’s and adolescents’ physical health level for three consecutive years.
The Ministry of Education said that in the next step, it will work with the member units of the national joint mechanism for comprehensive prevention and control of children and adolescents’ myopia to further improve the evaluation and assessment system for the prevention and control of children and adolescents’ myopia, mobilize the enthusiasm of the whole society, strive to create a good atmosphere dominated by the government, coordinated by departments, expert guidance, school education and family attention, and jointly take care of children’s eyes.
