26-year-old research genius returned to China to teach

His name is Chen Gao (gǎo). He went to high school at the age of 12 and was admitted to the Junior Class at the University of Science and Technology of China at the age of 14. He went to the United States for a Ph.D. at the age of 18 and graduated with a Ph.D. at the age of 23. He was a doctoral tutor at the age of 25, and returned at the age of 26. He teaches at the University of Science and Technology of China; he jumped all the way from an early age and became a genius “learning God” through self-study. I don’t understand his world at all, but I can tell you his experience.

He entered Ruian Middle School without taking the first prize in the National Mathematics Competition. Among his classmates is Dr. Zhang Wenhong;

He took the college entrance examination at the age of 14, and his score exceeded 84 points in the first line at the time. Even a 19-year-old high school student, even in 2020, can pass the first line with 84 points, and he can properly pass the entrance to 985;

He participated in the second Yau Chengtong University Student Mathematics Competition at the age of 17, and won two silvers and two bronzes. This award is the top mathematics competition in the field of domestic universities;

His undergraduate grades rank first in the Department of Mathematics of the University of Science and Technology of China, and his “rivals” are not just students in the junior class.

He received a full scholarship and studied at a doctoral university in the United States (State University of New York at Stony Brook) and trained three Nobel Prize winners including Yang Zhenning;

His doctoral supervisor is Professor Chen Xiuxiong, the winner of the Veblen Prize in the field of differential geometry;

Beginning in 2019, he has worked with Professor Chen Xiuxiong to study one of the core problems in geometry proposed by Professor Calabi in 1954, the Keller metric problem of constant quantitative relationship curvature;

After graduating from his Ph.D., he was recommended by Fields Medal winner Sir Donaldson and Wolf Prize winner Professor Sullivan, and went to the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study (where Einstein once worked) as a postdoc, following the Fields Medal winner’s post. Professor Katsh, the office next door once belonged to Einstein.

Since the Nobel Prize does not have a mathematics prize, the Fields Medal and Wolf Prize, the world’s top mathematics awards, are both called “Nobel Prizes in Mathematics.”

In 2021, under the premise of stability, he lifted the J equation independently proposed by Chen Xiuxiong and Donaldson and the deformation of the supercritical Hermit-Yang Zhenning-Mills equation proposed by Qiu Chengtong and others. His research results appeared in “Inventiones Mathematicae” (“New Advances in Mathematics”, the world’s top mathematics journal), and he decided to return to the University of Science and Technology of China to teach.

He will serve as a special professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (professional and technical positions are associate high, and the salary is paid according to the professor’s level), and will work at the Geometry and Physics Research Center (this institution directly belongs to the University of Science and Technology of China, based on geometry and physics Basic theoretical research).

Chen Gao has come to this day, what experience does he have? Chen Gao’s father is Chen Qianlin, the principal of the school attached to Hangzhou Normal University. Before school age, parents gave Chen Gao’s various games a scientific meaning, and they arranged “small topics” for children to explore. In elementary school, his parents encouraged him to read extensively. After studying, he should analyze and summarize verbally with his parents. In high school, he did not go to morning and evening self-study. Later, he taught himself at school a week and at home a week. He disciplined himself very strictly, even at home according to the textbooks for self-study. At the university level, the teaching of the juvenile class adopts the teacher’s key points, and the students rely on self-study.

Look, self-study + self-discipline. Even if we don’t have his talent, we can be better than the self-study and self-discipline ourselves, right?

What is the significance of Chen Gao’s scientific research results? Related research on the Yang-Mills equation has produced many Nobel Prize winners, and Chen Gao is likely to win the Fields Medal in the future. If someone further solves his mathematical results and promotes the grand unified theory, he may win the Nobel Prize in Physics.

China’s basic research fields (especially mathematics and physics) have produced too few revolutionary scientific research results. Although there are many papers, most of them are tinkering. There are even many people who think that we are the “small town writers” in the international scientific community. Chen Gao’s research results, in a sense, can help us get rid of this stereotype.
