The 985 university does not have A single A+ subject
In the fourth round of discipline evaluation, most of the A+ disciplines are covered by 985 universities, but there are still 7 985 universities without A single A+ discipline, which is somewhat disappointing. Today, I would like to introduce one of the seven universities, Nankai University.

Nankai University (NKU) is a key comprehensive research university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. It is one of the “Project 211”, “Project 985”, “World-Class University with First-Class Disciplines”, and “Beisheng of Universities”.

The 985 university does not have A single A+ subject
Nankai University has 5 national “Double First-class” disciplines, 6 first-class national key disciplines, 9 second-class national key disciplines, and 32 first-class Tianjin key disciplines. World History, Mathematics, Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and Statistics are world-class disciplines.

The university has won many first and second prizes in National Natural Science Awards, second prizes in National Science and Technology Progress Awards, and first and second prizes in University Scientific Research Achievements. The number of projects approved by National Major Social Science Fund, the number of honorary awards, and the quantity and quality of papers indexed by SCI all rank at the forefront of the country, making it a top university in everyone’s mind.

However, in the fourth round of discipline evaluation, Nankai University did not get an A+ discipline, which was disappointing!

In the fourth round of discipline evaluation theory in economics, mathematics, chemistry, statistics, and business management is rated as A five disciplines, applied economics, political science, marxism theory and Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, world history, physics, biology and environmental science and engineering is rated as A – nine disciplines, in addition to the nine subjects rated B +. It looks good at first glance, but it lacks the top 2%(or two) of subjects, known as the top subjects.

Gong Ke, former president of Nankai University, also commented on the 12th discipline evaluation, saying that he felt uncomfortable about the results of the fourth evaluation and was under great pressure. They will take this as an opportunity to grasp the problem and fight hard. This is a convincing assessment, but it does not scientifically quantify the state of a university’s fundamental mission of educating people, and it may still lead to a lack of enthusiasm for fame.
